Salk
Institute for Biological Studies
Scientist Dr. Charles F. Stevens
Gave Lecture on January 19, 2007

Dr. Charles Stevens, M.D., Ph.D., of the Salk
Institute for Biological
Studies presented a special
lecture titled "A
Universal Law Governing the
Architecture of Axonal and
Dendritic Arbors" on
January 19 at 1:30 PM at UAB
Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
This lecture was co-sponsored by
the UAB Evelyn F. McKnight Brain
Institute and the Department of
Neurobiology. The larger
venue provides easy access to the
event for the UAB medical and
research community.
UAB Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute Selects Four Faculty to Receive
Research Grant Awards
The Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute in the Department of Neurobiology
recently completed selection of the recipients of the 2nd
Annual Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Research Foundation
Research Grant Awards. Four
excellent projects were selected for funding from a larger group of highly
meritorious applications. The awardees were Dr.
Graeme Bolger, Department of Medicine; Dr.
Lynn Dobrunz
, Department of Neurobiology; Dr.
Lori McMahon, Department of Physiology and Biophysics and Dr.
Trygve Tollefsbol, Department of Biology. These investigators are
using a wide range of cellular and molecular methodologies to investigate
basic mechanisms of age-related declines in memory and cognitive
performance. The McKnight awardees will each receive $40,000 for one year
of support for their novel research programs. The awards allow the
recipients to gather sufficient preliminary data for preparation of
applications for extramural NIH funding. Work supported includes study of
Estrogen and synaptic plasticity in young adult and aging rat hippocampus
(Dr. McMahon), Changes in Group I mGluR effects on hippocampal synaptic
plasticity in aging (Dr. Dobrunz), Functions and mechanisms of DNA
methylation in age-related decline of long-term memory formation (Dr.
Tollefsbol) and PDE4 protein-protein interaction network in disorders of
learning and memory (Dr.Bolger). These studies all use innovative state of
the art methods for studying various aspects of processes likely to be
involved in normal aging. These investigators will talk about their work
at the 2006 Annual Neurobiology Retreat.

2006 - Evelyn F. McKnight Foundation Awards an Additional $1-million in Funds For Brain Institute at UAB
The School of Medicine at UAB has received an award of $1-million from the McKnight Brain Research Foundation to further support research in age-related memory loss. The new award will establish the Evelyn F. McKnight Endowed Chair for Learning and Memory in Aging. This new grant compliments the original award of $5-million that established the Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute which will be housed in the Richard C. and Annette N. Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building, scheduled to open in early 2006.
J. David Sweatt, Ph.D., Chairman of the Department of Neurobiology, has been named recipient of the Evelyn F. McKnight Endowed Chair.
