General
Information
This
page provides general information and links about UAB, Birmingham, and
the Neurobiology Graduate Program. Specific information concerning Admissions
and our Research is available through links on this site.
Financial
Aid
All students receive a first year stipend of $21,000 plus tuition remission
and health insurance. In the second year and beyond, stipends and tuition/fees
are provided by training grants, mentors research grants or individual
research fellowships/awards.
Cost of Study
The Neurobiology Department and the mentor provide complete coverage for
tuition, fees and full stipend for all students during all years in the
program.
Living and Housing Costs
Students may choose to live in university dormitories, on-campus apartments
or select from a wide range of nearby off-campus apartments or houses.
Usual monthly rental fees range from $150-$250/month (shared) to $200-$400/month
(individual).
Student Group
The Department of Neurobiology admits 5-6 students per year. Forty doctoral
and postdoctoral students are currently training with primary faculty
in the Department with another 40 training with affiliated Neurobiology
faculty.
Location
Birmingham, Alabama is a vibrant, rapidly growing community with a metro
population
of 1.2 million set along a series of beautiful mountain and valley ridge
lines. The city has a rich cultural diversity represented by UABs
Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts, the Alabama Symphony, the
citys annual City Stages musical festival,
the Alabama Ballet, and a variety of ethnic
and heritage festivals.

The climate is mild with opportunity for year-round
outdoor recreation including hiking in nearby national forests and state
parks, canoeing in the many rivers and lakes and numerous public tennis
and golf facilities. Restaurants offer diverse cuisine and ambiance with
notable excellence in Chinese, Greek, Italian, Mexican, Thai and French
food. The nearby Florida beaches (4 hour drive) offer year-round coastal
and aquatic amenities. Entertainment venues in Nashville and Atlanta are
an easy "day-trip" from Birmingham. Above, the Cahaba River, just
south of Birmingham, offers beautiful scenery in the Fall.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham
UAB offers one of the leading environments in the U.S. to pursue graduate
studies, particularly in the Biomedical Sciences. Doctoral programs are
available in over thirty disciplines. The University is a Carnegie Division
I Research Institution and is consistently ranked in the top 20 institutions
in the U.S. in federal funding for research.
